Enthusiastic Learning

Woodleigh offers a unique child centred approach which recognises the needs, interests, aspirations and achievement of every pupil.

Education is tailored for every pupil, enabling staff to highlight areas of strength and areas to target for improvement for each individual.

Pre Prep pupils experience a broad and balanced curriculum based on the National Curriculum but providing opportunities to expand and explore taking into account the child’s interests.

In years 3-6 pupils are gradually introduced to subject based classes taught by specialists. English, Maths, Science, ICT, History, Geography, French, Art, CDT, PE, Music, PSHE and Latin comprise the curriculum.

During years 7&8 pupils are prepared for Common Entrance, Entrance exams and Scholarship exams for 13+ entry into senior schools. Traditional academic subjects, including Latin, are taught to a modern and engaging curriculum with an emphasis on inspiring learning. Teachers at Woodleigh teach to pupils and classes, and not to textbooks.

Music, Drama, Art, CDT and outdoor education complement the academic subjects. Every afternoon there is a sports programme which varies throughout the year.

Pupils are prepared for entrance exams to senior schools and the 13+ Common Entrance Exam. High ability students are prepared for Scholarship exams.

Pupil progress is monitored closely throughout a pupil’s time at Woodleigh. Any potential difficulties are identified early to ensure the correct provision is provided. Similarly, potential Scholarship candidates are identified to enable a tailored programme of study in Years Seven and Eight.

A flourishing house point system is in place to encourage academic and sporting achievement. Effort and attainment grades are published each term. Pupils sit exams or tests at the end of each term. Comprehensive reports for every subject are sent to parents at the end of each term. There are twice termly parent consultation meetings, but in addition, parents are encouraged to discuss their children’s progress with staff at any time.
