Old Woodleighan film director Mark Herman has received an honorary degree from the University of Hull, Scarborough Campus.

Bridlington born Mark Herman is well known for directing the Oscar nominated film Little Voice, which was filmed in Scarborough; The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, based on the novel by John Boyne and Brassed Off, a story about a struggling brass band.

Brassed Off recently provided the inspiration for the York brass music event “Brassed On“, which pupils from Woodleigh School performed in and Headmaster Michael England helped to organise.

Mark Herman was a pupil at Woodleigh School in the 1960s and went on to study film at Leeds Polytechnic before training as an animator at the National Film School in London.
